You just got a new smart TV. It is on the wall or on the stand. The remote is in your hand. Now what? Smart TV setup sounds simple until you are 40 minutes in, the WiFi will not connect, the OTT apps are not loading, and you are not sure which HDMI port does what.

This guide covers everything from WiFi connection and streaming apps to HDMI configuration and soundbar setup and tells you when a professional setup is worth calling in.

Connecting Your Smart TV to WiFi and Why It Keeps Disconnecting

Go to Settings, Network, Wireless Setup on your TV and select your network. But the connection itself is only part of the issue. Persistent disconnections or slow streaming are almost always a placement and band problem.

  • Use 5 GHz over 2.4 GHz for streaming. In Mumbai apartment buildings, 2.4 GHz is shared by dozens of nearby routers and is heavily congested.
  • If your TV is far from the router, 5 GHz signal will be weak it has a shorter range. A mesh node near the TV solves this better than an extender.
  • Set DNS manually to 8.8.8.8 in your TV network settings. This resolves many content-loading issues on Indian ISP connections.

Setting Up OTT Apps: Netflix, Prime Video, JioHotstar, YouTube

Android TV and Google TV have the broadest app support via the Play Store. Samsung Tizen and LG webOS have curated stores most major Indian OTT apps are available, but updates sometimes lag behind.

  • Sign into your Google account on Android TV to access all apps. The same account syncs your YouTube history and Play purchases.
  • For JioHotstar, use your Jio or Star login credentials. An active subscription unlocks all content automatically.
  • Casting from phone works on all Android TVs. Tap the Cast icon in Netflix, YouTube, or Prime and select your TV.

Understanding HDMI Ports, ARC, eARC, and Why It Matters

Look at the back of your TV. One HDMI port is labelled ARC or eARC. This is the only port that sends audio back to a connected soundbar. If both your TV and soundbar are connected via their respective ARC ports, you can control soundbar volume with the TV remote.

  • Connect your set top box (Tata Play, Airtel Digital TV) to HDMI 1.
  • Connect your soundbar or AV receiver to the ARC port.
  • Connect a laptop or gaming console to any remaining HDMI port.

HDMI handshake errors where a connected device shows no signal are usually fixed by unplugging and replugging the cable, or power cycling the TV with the cable connected.

Smart TV Audio: Soundbar, Bluetooth, and Home Theatre

  • HDMI ARC is the best soundbar connection single cable, full audio return, TV remote volume control.
  • Optical (TOSLINK) is a reliable fallback if your soundbar does not have HDMI ARC.
  • Bluetooth speakers pair through Settings, Sound, Bluetooth Audio. Audio-video sync delay (latency) is the main limitation of Bluetooth for TV audio.
